The avocado is an excellent fruit for natural skin care because it helps moisturize and rejuvenate dry and aging skin. It is also very useful when treating sun or climate damaged skin that is dehydrated and under-nourished, as well as helping regenerate the skin by softening the tissues. Avocado and avocado oil have been appearing in more and more natural skin care products because they are so rich in skin nourishing vitamins A, D and E. Avocado is also abundant in essential oils and B-complex vitamins.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology vitamins B-3 also known as niacin and B-5 also known as pantothenic acid are popular additions to natural skin care products, mostly because they help hold moisture in. Niacin acts as an anti-inflammatory, niacin soothes irritated skin and can calm red, blotchy skin. One avocado has 3.8 mg niacin 27% of your daily need, making it an excellent source of nutrition and a great natural skin care treatment option.

In a past study done at the Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology by Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, it was found that avocado oil significantly increases the amount of collagen in the skin – which is constantly dimenishing as we age. This makes avocado oil the perfect ingredient in natural anti aging products.

The best natural skin care products are those made in your own kitchen. By making your own skin care products you are limiting the amount of chemicals and irritants your skin is exposed to. Many products labeled as natural also include fragrances, dyes and other ingredients that can damage the skin.

Also, a good natural lotion for dry skin protects against the elements, prevents moisture loss while still allowing the skin to breath, reduces the absorption of toxins, and is free of toxic chemicals (some skin care ingredients are even worse than chemical pollutants.)

Almost everything you do can cause dry skin. Spending time in the kitchen, washing your hands frequently while cooking, doing the dishes and cleaning can leave hands dry and irritated. Over exposure to water and chemicals damages the skin’s natural protective barrier and strips the skin of essential moisturizing oils. When gardening your hands are often in the dirt and can come into contact with some dangerous chemicals. The weather can also reek havoc on your skin. Harsh winds can chap and dry skin causing it to become uncomfortable. You must protect against the elements with a shielding lotion.
